અમે નાના હતા ત્યારે ખેતરમાં ફરવા જતા હતા. ખેતરમાં મને ‘ચાડીયો’ જોવાની બહુ મજા પડતી. આજેય ક્યારેક ખેતરમાં ચાડીયો જોઉં છું ત્યારે મારા ભીતરમાં બાળપણનો રોમાંચ છલકાઈ ઉઠે છે. આ ચાડીયો એટલે શું? ખેતરમાં પાક (ફસલ)ને પશુ–પંખીઓ નુકસાન ન પહોંચાડે એ હેતુથી આડી–ઉભી લાકડીનો ક્રૉસ બનાવીને એને પુરુષનાં કપડાં પહેરાવેલાં હોય. પશુ–પંખીઓને દુરથી ત્યાં કોઈ માણસ ઉભો હોય એવો વહેમ પડે અને ચણ ચણવા કે ઘાસ ચરવા અન્દર ઘુસી ન જાય. ક્યારેક ચાડીયાને માથે હૅટ પણ ગોઠવેલી હોય. ક્યારેક ચાડીયો લાકડી ઉગામીને ઉભેલો હોય. એમાં કલાત્મકતા હોવી અનીવાર્ય નહોતી. એનો હેતુ તો ભય અને ભ્રમ પેદા કરવાનો જ હતો. ક્યારેક મને લાગે છે કે આપણા ધર્મગુરુઓએ આપણને ડરાવવા માટે, આપણામાં ભય અને ભ્રમ પ્રગટાવવા માટે ઈશ્વરના નામનો ચાડીયો આપણી સામે મુકી દીધો છે!

ઈશ્વર વીશેની મારી વ્યાખ્યા સાવ સરળ અને સર્વસ્વીકૃત છે. જો કોઈ નાસ્તીક વ્યક્તી પણ આ વ્યાખ્યા સાંભળે તો એને સ્વીકારવા તૈયાર થશે.આપણને આફતમાં રાહત આપે, સંકટમાં સહાયક બને અને છતાંય વળતરની કે બદલાની જરાય અપેક્ષા ન રાખે, પોતે જે કંઈ મહાન પુણ્યકાર્ય કર્યું એની ક્યાંય બડાશ ન મારે – પ્રદર્શન ન કરે તે ઈશ્વર. ભલે પછી તે સ્વજન–મીત્ર રુપે હોય કે અજાણી વ્યક્તી સ્વરુપે હોય!

મને તેવો ઈશ્વર નથી જોઈતો, જે મારી ભુલો માટે મને પનીશમેન્ટ કરે. મને તો તેવો ઈશ્વર જોઈએ છે, જે મારી કોઈ પણ ભુલ ગમે ત્યારે માફ કરીને મને ભરપુર વહાલ કરે. મારી પાસેથી દાન–દક્ષીણા, પ્રસાદ, ભોગ, ભેટ કંઈ જ ન માગે. કશીય અપેક્ષા વગર મારા ઉપર કૃપા અને કરુણા વરસાવે તેને હુંઈશ્વર કહેવા–માનવા તૈયાર છું.

આપણને રીબાવે, તડપાવે, પનીશમેન્ટ કરે, સુખો ભોગવવા ન દે, આપણને સુખો ભોગવતા જોઈને ભડકી ઉઠે, આપણી પાસે ટાંટીયાતોડ જાત્રાઓ કરાવે, દુધમાં નાહવાનું જેને ગમે, ગરીબ ભક્ત પાસેથીય છપ્પન ભોગની અપેક્ષા રાખે, કીમતી ઝાકઝમાળ અને ઘંટારવના પ્રદુષણથી જે પ્રસન્ન થતો હોય તેવો ઈશ્વર તો માત્ર કલ્પના જ છે. સાચો ઈશ્વર તો નક્કી આપણી આસપાસમાં આપણને કોઈ તકલીફ ન પડે અને કદાચ તકલીફ પડે તો સ્નેહથી સહાય કરવાની પ્રતીક્ષામાં ઉભેલો હશે. મીત્રો–સ્વજનોનું આવું ઈશ્વરી સ્વરુપ સમજાય તો નો પ્રૉબ્લેમ.
